Overview
The Jagged Steel is one of the first significant weapons you can earn in Phantom Blade Zero, and it punches far above its weight class. Dropped by Maskwalker Jagged Steel — the Frenzied Brute of Weeping Creek Valley — it is a longsword built around one idea: making enemies bleed, whether they like it or not.
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Type | Longsword |
| Source | Dropped by Maskwalker Jagged Steel (Weeping Creek Valley) |
| Base identity | Rapid Bleed Gauge build-up on hits |
| Temper material | Iron Butcher Mask |
| Tempered ability | Open Wounds — Bleed fills through blocks |
Why Bleed Matters
Phantom Blade Zero’s Bleed status rewards sustained pressure. Once the Bleed Gauge fills, the target suffers a burst of damage — and the Jagged Steel builds that gauge faster than anything else available in the opening regions. Against humanoid enemies who turtle up, Bleed is also psychological warfare: they can block your steel, but they cannot block their own blood loss.
The known gap: Puppets, Golden Bodies, and Phantom Bodies are immune to Bleed. The Livingwood Talisman closes that gap by letting Bleed proc on Puppets, which is why every serious Bleed build includes it.
How to Get It
Follow the main path through Weeping Creek Valley. The Maskwalker Jagged Steel fight is the region’s mandatory boss encounter — beat him and the sword is yours. The fight itself doubles as the tutorial for the weapon: parry his blue flashes, Ghoststep the red ones, and you’ll already be playing the way the Jagged Steel wants you to play.
Soul Tempering: Open Wounds
The Jagged Steel’s second act comes from Soul Tempering. Its material, the Iron Butcher Mask, drops from the Iron Butcher — a second Maskwalker hidden behind a mist gate at Meigu Lake’s Mountain of Imprisonment. The full route requires repairing the Illusory Pipa first.
The tempered ability, Open Wounds, is what makes the sword endgame-viable: blocked hits still fill the Bleed Gauge. Enemies that hide behind shields become free damage. Tempering costs Remnant Dust on top of the mask — bank your Dust from the early game.
Build Synergy
The Jagged Steel anchors the launch community’s strongest confirmed build:
- Jagged Steel (Open Wounds) — bleeds blockers.
- Hunter’s Chain Sickle (Gleaming Hook) — adds Bleed build-up to grapple attacks, extending pressure everywhere.
- Livingwood Talisman — extends Bleed to Puppets.
Together, nearly nothing in the game is immune to your damage. The material hunts for both tempered pieces are documented in the Iron Butcher guide and the Puppet Tongue Key walkthrough.
Verdict
Do not bench the Jagged Steel when bigger damage numbers appear. Tempered, it is a system — one that scales with your aggression and stays useful deep into the campaign.
